Hearts of Mercy, a local outreach group serving families in need, recently celebrated the holidays with a “Cookies and Treats” event in Barnegat Township.
Lucy Molinaro, event coordinator, said that on Dec. 9, approximately 75 children stopped by the corner of Bowline Street and Bilge Avenue for free doughnuts, hot chocolate and cookies.
“We also gave out stuffed animals, scarves, hats and socks,” she said.
She said Hearts of Mercy’s mission is helping to “break the cycle of poverty through learning and enrichment programs.”
“We provide tutoring, mentoring, art classes, summer camp and access to sports and enrichment programs to this impoverished community throughout the academic year,” said Molinaro.
The group was co-founded in 2018 by Barnegat resident Kristin Santorelli, who just by her driving around local neighborhoods sensed there were people who were very much in need.
“I saw families with strollers and small children walking in the rain or snow. I was curious and wanted to know more,” Santorelli said. “One day I met families and individuals and heard their stories. I realize how thankful I am for my family, friends and all of the opportunities I have been given throughout my life, along with the help and support that was so often needed. Many of the people we are building relationships with weren’t given these privileges. They need hope.”
Santorelli said the group has expanded its services to include STEAM programs, music lessons and art classes from the Ocean County Artists Guild.
“With these opportunities, we expose our students to new people, places and experiences that aid in positive growth and development,” she said. “We’ve taken our children to lakes to study the water, to fishing and surfing on LBI. There is no border with opportunities here.”
